Editorial Policy & Methodology

How we research, build, and maintain our legal cost calculators.

Our Editorial Mission

Publisher accountability: FreeLegalIQ was founded and is published by Brenda Nelson. She oversees the site's mission, publishing standards, corrections channel, and the separation between editorial work and monetization. Brenda is not presented as an attorney, and the site does not provide legal advice.

FreeLegalIQ is committed to providing accurate, unbiased, and up-to-date legal cost information. Legal matters are among the highest-stakes decisions people face โ€” misinformation about costs can lead to serious financial and legal consequences. Our editorial team holds all content to a strict standard of accuracy, source transparency, and complete independence from any law firm or legal services company.

We do not accept payment to change a calculator output or editorial conclusion. The site may earn revenue from display advertising and clearly disclosed affiliate links; those relationships are kept separate from the calculation and research process.

Important: FreeLegalIQ provides cost estimates for informational purposes only. Nothing on this site constitutes legal advice, and no attorney-client relationship is created by use of this site. Always consult a licensed attorney in your jurisdiction before making legal decisions.

How Our Calculators Are Built

Every legal cost calculator is intended as a budgeting model rather than a substitute for an official worksheet, a professional quote, or individualized legal advice. Our research process is:

Primary Data Sources

Our legal cost calculators draw on the following authoritative sources:

Content Updates and Use of Drafting Tools

Software tools may assist with research organization, calculations, consistency checks, and early drafts. They do not make a calculator legally authoritative. Material should not be marked reviewed until its claims, source links, visible FAQs, structured data, and calculator behavior have been checked.

Scheduled Reviews

We periodically review the calculator inventory and prioritize pages with changed official fees, reported errors, expiring data, or high-risk jurisdictional claims.

Triggered Updates

When USCIS publishes a new fee rule, when a state enacts significant traffic fine changes, or when our sources publish updated billing rate surveys, we update affected calculators within 4 weeks. USCIS fee changes in particular are applied promptly because they directly affect calculator accuracy.

Dates Mean Substantive Review

A "last reviewed" or sitemap modification date is changed only after a substantive source, formula, explanatory, or usability review. Dates are not rotated merely to make a page appear fresh.

Editorial Independence & Advertising Disclosure

FreeLegalIQ displays Google AdSense advertisements. Ads are selected by Google's automated systems โ€” we have no influence over which ads appear, and advertising has zero influence on calculator methodologies or editorial content.

FreeLegalIQ is independently operated and is not a law firm. No attorney, law firm, referral service, advertiser, retailer, or legal platform controls our calculator methodologies, results, or editorial conclusions.

Some pages contain affiliate links to books, legal resources, or third-party services. These links are identified with a disclosure near the recommendation and use the appropriate sponsored-link designation. If a reader makes a qualifying purchase or signs up through an affiliate link, FreeLegalIQ may earn a commission at no additional cost to the reader.

Affiliate compensation does not influence calculator results or editorial decisions. Inclusion is based on relevance and potential usefulness to the reader. Every calculator and its complete results remain free. Following an affiliate link is optional, separate from calculator use, and always the visitor's independent choice.

Accuracy & Corrections Policy

Legal costs vary significantly based on your specific jurisdiction, the complexity of your matter, the attorney you choose, and many other factors outside our control. Our calculators are designed to give you a realistic cost range for planning purposes โ€” not a guaranteed quote.

If you believe a calculator contains an error โ€” an incorrect filing fee, an outdated USCIS form cost, or a rate benchmark that's significantly off โ€” please contact us at support@freelegaliq.com with the subject "Calculator Error." Include the calculator name, your state/jurisdiction, the specific figure in question, and what you believe the correct figure to be (with a source if possible).

We investigate all reported errors and apply verified corrections promptly. Because legal costs are jurisdictionally specific, we appreciate when users flag state-specific discrepancies from official court sources.
